Abstract
The article aims to determine the impact of sustainable development onthe self-reliance of local self-government in Poland. A thorough analysisof the historiographic evolution and philosophical foundations ofsustainability, together with a review of its legal sources, indicates thatsustainable development – implemented through the concept ofgovernance – conflicts with the foundational values of Latin civilizationand exerts a negative influence on local self-government in Poland. Thearticle argues that the development of the decentralisation of publicauthority, which is highly desirable from the perspective ofdemocratisation, is being inhibited, and that the financial autonomy oflocal government is not being expanded.
