Abstract

Greek Authors in the Works of Péter Pázmány The power of authority played an important role in the scientific discourse of the 16th and 17th centuries, and therefore the incorporation of authoritative referenc- es into argumentation was an essential part of rhetorical proof. Peter Pázmány wanted to conform to this scientific standard when he cited an immense amount of literature to support his arguments. He did so with complete transparency, that is, by marking the exact places he cited or referred to on the margin. In my study I will examine the references to Greek-language authors, focusing on Pázmány’s two most important and monumental works, on the Isteni igazságra vezérlő Kalauz [A Guide to the Truth of God] and the Prédikációk [Semons]. Unsurprisingly, Aristotle is the most frequently cited author, followed by the church historians (Eusebius of Caesarea, Socrates Scholasticus, Sozomen, etc.) and the Greek church fathers (St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory of Nazianzus). Among the ancient pagan authors, Plutarch is also often quoted by Pázmány. The Moralia, a collection of the moral writings of the priest of Apollo at Delphi was rediscovered by the prehumanists and, thanks to its complete Latin trans- lation in the last third of the 16th century, its popularity approached that of Seneca. Latin was central to Catholic theological and controversial literature, while the use of Greek (and Hebrew) was almost confined to biblical exegesis. Pázmány al- so referred to the Greek authors in their Latin translations, and I examine, among other things, which translations were available to him at the time.
