Abstract

No other family in Hungary is as closely associated with the production, design and distribution of publications as the Kner family, who were printers, bookbinders and graphic designers. Izidor Kner (1860–1930), who founded the print house in Gyoma in 1882 and made it one of the most significant companies in the Hungarian countryside over the course of mere decades, and his son Imre Kner (1890–1944/45?), who followed in his footsteps, had a close relationship with books not only as printers, business managers, typographers and publishers, but also as book collectors and editors of books and articles. Therefore, it is worthwhile to analyze how their choice of reading material influenced their mentality / thinking and visual perspectives as well as the role that books played in their lives. Izidor Kner delved into his reading experiences and the books that were important to him in his self-published 1931 memoir, while his son did the same in his lengthy correspondences with his friends. Imre Kner additionally covered his reading experiences in two other publications. Finally, by reviewing Imre Kner’s reflections on his invaluable library that consisted of nearly nine thousand books or by examining a fractional list of their sizable book collection, we can better understand the Kners’ tendencies regarding the utility, collection and reading of books as well as their literacy / culture.
