Abstract

In this article we will review the memorial history of the execution of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, and his family, not merely listing the most important sources, but describing them, revealing the layers of memory politics and their evolution. In the article we list data in support of the fact that the execution squad included Hungarian “red soldiers.” Based on new Hungarian and Russian archival research, András Verhás, one of the Hungarian members of the potential firing squad who was born in Budapest, was identified with absolute certainty. In our article we present new arguments in favor of the reliability of Johann Meier’s text, which mentions members of the firing squad. The article also concludes that the execution of the former Russian tsar was ordered by Moscow, but that the killing of his wife and children was a local initiative.
