Abstract

A Waldbauer–Kerpely-vonósnégyes, amely a 20. század első felének egyik legjelentősebb magyar kamarazenei társulása, s egyben az új magyar zene, azaz Bartók Béla és Kodály Zoltán műveinek propagálója volt, Dohnányi Ernő kompozícióit is gyakran műsorra tűzte. Kenton (Kornstein) Egon, aki 1912-től egy jó évtizeden át a vonósnégyes brácsásaként működött, a Dohnányival közös produkciók során kötött barátságot a zeneszerző-zongoraművésszel. Kenton 1923-ban aztán az Egyesült Államokba emigrált, és amikor Dohnányi a második világháború után, 1949-ben szintén Amerikában telepedett le, nagy örömmel köszöntötte a zeneszerzőt. Ettől fogva rendszeres levélkapcsolatban álltak, eszmét cseréltek az amerikai zeneéletről, szakmai elfoglaltságaikról és az emigrációs lét nehézségeiről. Bensőséges hangú beszámolóik hűen tükrözik egymás iránt érzett nagyrabecsülésüket, szeretetüket és a zene, a kamaramuzsika iránt való, a megváltozott körülmények ellenére is töretlen odaadásukat. | The Waldbauer–Kerpely String Quartet, one of the most significant Hungarian chamber music ensembles of the first half of the 20th century, was a promoter of new Hungarian music, namely the works of Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, and often included compositions by Ernst von Dohnányi (Ernő Dohnányi) in its repertoire. Egon Kenton (Egon Kornstein), who played the viola in the string quartet for over a decade from 1912, became friends with the composer and pianist during their joint performances. Kenton emigrated to the United States in 1923, and when Dohnányi also settled in America after World War II, in 1949, Kenton welcomed him with great joy. From then on, they corresponded regularly, exchanging ideas about American musical life, their professional activities, and the difficulties of their émigré years. Their accounts faithfully reflect their mutual appreciation and respect, as well as their unwavering devotion to music and chamber music despite the changed circumstances.
