Abstract

Considered one of the first socialist realist plays in Romania, Mihail Davidoglu’s “The Miners” premiered on stages throughout the country in 1949. Focusing on the staging at the Hungarian State Theatre of Cluj, the paper explores the creation and reception of Davidoglu’s play in a centralized cultural and ideological context, as well as the intertwined relations between the politics of industrialization and the rise of the new heroes on and off the stage.
