Abstract
International scholarship highlights that the influence of Protestantism among early modern nations was intense also with respect to how they fashioned themselves and what selfidentification strategies they operated. The paralleled destiny of Hungary and Transylvania on the one hand, and the ancient Israel on the other offered a pattern primarily to Calvinist preachers to use biblical texts to hold a mirror to their own age (“chosen people”). Expressions like the “Hungarian Israel”, “Hungarian Sion”, or “our second Jerusalem in the Hungarian Realm” often appear in primarily Calvinist sermons and prayers. The Unitarian manuscript volumes from the 1690s analyzed in this paper adopt many elements of this “Hebraic patriotism”. This is the period of the collapse of the autonomous Transylvania. The sources analyzed are special in that the sermons and prayers they contain accurately record the time of their writing or delivery, like in a diary, therefore the circumstances of their writing can be easily reconstructed. In contrast to printed sermons, the audience of the delivered speeches can also be identified: the mostly Unitarian population of the village of Bölön (seat of Miklósvár, Háromszék) in the Sekler region of Transylvania. The texts suggest that the identity of Seklers from Bölön was a compound of their equal fidelity to the one-time Kingdom of Hungary, the autonomous Transylvania, their own estate privileges, and their Unitarian confession
