Abstract

Végigtekintve pályája főbb szakaszain, mindezek miatt egyúttal a magyar mezőgazdaság egyre környezettudatosabb negyvenéves fejlődéstörténetét is megismerhetjük. | Few research careers can be said to have followed in their stages the major challenges of their discipline in their lifetime. Tamás Németh’s career was one of these. His entire work is characterized by the fact that he noticed and grasped the current problems of agricultural chemisation and nutrient supply with incredible sensitivity and formulated their critical questions as precisely as possible, and sought the answers to them through long years of persistent research work. For all these reasons, looking at the main stages of his career, we can also get to know the forty-year history of the increasingly environmentally conscious development of Hungarian agriculture. The intensive chemisation phase of Hungarian agriculture took place when he started his career. A significant proportion of the fertilisers used were not applied rationally, so there was an urgent need to develop a system that would base fertiliser application on soil tests and taking into account the actual nutrient requirements of the crops. Tamás Németh was involved in this work and used the experience gathered here in his research activities. His studies in the United States gave him an insight into one of the world’s most efficient agricultural systems and their governance, which also benefited him. From the beginning, his research has focused on the processes of transformation of nitrogen forms and, in this context, on the identification of their environmental hazards and the investigation of intervention options to prevent unfavourable processes. He was one of the first to recognise the value of long-term experimental data and, with his colleagues, began to build on this to develop a modern nutrient management system that takes into account both agronomic efficiency and environmental impacts. Later, the first versions of the general material flow models were also based on data from long-term experiments. Even as a leading scientist and academician, his responsibility for the conservation of Hungarian soils was evident in all his speeches, and he never failed to criticise the land-wasting investments and unsustainable land use. It is also an obligation for all of us to take this attitude forward.
