Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of cultural memory about the industrial era, which is close to a significant part of society, but is rapidly disappearing. Taking into account its global nature, the authors connect the issues of memory of the industrial past, relevant for residents of a large Russian industrial agglomeration centered in Ekaterinburg, with the consideration of the problem in the world research discourse and existing commemorative practices. Keeping in mind the developments of numerous researchers of the problems of cultural memory and the analysis of theoretical and practical results achieved in the commemoration of the industrial past by foreign and Russian specialists, and based on the postulate of the historically conditioned integration of the Urals into the world industrial system, the authors determine the physical matrix of the industrial heritage of one of the most significant industrial centers of Russia - Ekaterinburg (founded in 1723) and nearby cities, identify insufficiently studied problems. The study of various aspects and forms of memory (classical and modern) about the industrial past in Ekaterinburg and the cities of the agglomeration leads to the conclusion about the need for a synthesis of the “high” and the routine, the official and the everyday as a way of representing the industrial culture of a particular city.
