Abstract

Regular (monthly) waterbird censuses have been carried out by the South-Balaton Nature Conservation Group (BirdLife Hungary) at the southern shore of Lake Balaton since 2003 (Kovács, 2005a; 2005b; 2007). Due to financial and technical problems it was not possible to conduct bird censuses at each plot of the whole Balaton area. We had always tried to carry out a complete survey, which was first made possible in the autumn of 2005 thanks to the participation of the Waterbird Protection Society (BirdLife Hungary). | Synchronous waterbird survey were carried out on 12 November 2005 by 26 observers at 53 plots of Lake Balaton and of other wetlands connected to its southern shore (Table 1). The survey was conducted in perfect weather conditions with no disturbing factors such as rainfall, fog etc. Bird censuses have been carried out using point count technique (shores of Lake Balaton) (Koskimies & Pöysá, 1991) and round count technique (other wetland habitats) (Kaupinnen et al., 1991). For the bird survey binoculars and field scopes have been used. The observers participated and their plots (Map 1) were the following: 1. Keszthely mole: Péter Farkas. 2. Fenékpuszta Bird Ringing Center: Anikó Paprika, Szabolcs Benke. 3-6. Balatonberény-Bélatelep, 7. Fonyód fishponds, 8. Marcali reservoir, 9. Nagyberek: Eleonóra Fitos, Judit Hardy, Márta Sípos, Zsolt Bende. 10. Tatárvár fishponds: Orsolya Pálmai, JÓZSEF Pálmai. 11. Ordacsehi wetland, 12-16. Fonyód-Balatonlelle-felsö: Marianna Kapitány, Gyula Kovács. 17. Irmapuszta fishponds: Erika Vajant, Béla Vincze Jr. 18-24. Balatonszemes-Szántód haven, 21. Balatonszárszó wetland, 23.
