Abstract

Waterbird cenus was carried out by the South-Balaton Nature Conservation Group (BirdLife Hungary) at 51 survey plots (Table 1, Map 1) around Lake Balaton and other wetlands connected to its southern shore on the 16th of December 2006, similarly to the 2005 census (Kovács, 2008). During the count a total of 32 waterbird species (belonging to 10 families) were recorded. The number of species recorded on Lake Balaton is 24, while in the other wetland habitats 23 species were observed (Table 2, Map 2). Compared to the results in 2005, the number of individuals was less on Lake Balaton (10 560 birds, 60%) and higher in the surrounding wetland habitats (>7000 birds, 40%). The biggest flock of birds (>5000 individuals) was recorded from Nagyberek (Fehérvíz Nature Conservation Area). The most abundant bird species were Eurasian Coot - Fulica atra (3300 birds) (Figure 1) and Mallard - Anas platyrhynchos (3100 birds), the latter resulted to be the most constant species (Figure 3). Figures 1 and 2 show the remaining dominant (D >5%), accessory (D 1-5%) and accidental (D 0,1-1%) species.
