Abstract
All professionals are familiar with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, typically represented by a pyramid. It is well known that there is no relevant empirical support for the model. Still, the needs themselves are indisputable at a basic level, so as a generic approach, development theorists, motivation researchers, and experts are attracted to the verification, validation, or refutation of these needs. In this article, the authors summarize what Maslow started with his motivational research and where subsequent generations of experts have arrived in terms of known needs.
