Abstract
The death of the Emperor Valentinian I on the 17th of November 375, marked one of the most significant events in the Late Roman history of Pannonia. This study seeks to reassess the circumstances of the Quadi–Sarmatian attack of 374, the fortification program along the Ripa Pannonica, and the transformation of the legionary fortress at Brigetio in the Late Roman period, through the integration of historical texts (primarily Ammianus Marcellinus) with the latest archaeological, geophysical, and numismatic evidence. Particular emphasis is accorded to the large apsidal structure excavated in the area of the praetentura . Based on analogies, this structure is interpreted as having fulfilled an administrative function, therefore it is plausible that it may have served as a suitable setting for the emperor's reception of envoys. Furthermore, with regard to Aquincum and Brigetio, this study aims to offer new perspectives on the disputed location of Emperor Valentinian II's proclamation.
