Abstract
The study analyses how Transylvanian and East German refugee issues were covered in Hungary’s “first” and “second” public spheres during the late socialist period, as well as in a satirical journal that represented an intermediate position. Through this comparative lens, the study highlights the contradictory dynamics between state-controlled news production and the alternative public sphere seeking to compensate for the information withheld by official channels.
