Abstract

The rapid digitalization of society has introduced new risks for children and adolescents, including cyberbullying and exposure to detrimental online ideologies. This study examines how Hungarian online media addressed these issues during a significant cultural event that had the potential to stimulate public discourse. Utilizing content analysis, we analyzed the coverage of a globally popular Netflix miniseries that focuses on cyberbullying, paying particular attention to the timing, depth, and potential reach of the published articles. The results indicate that while there was significant initial media attention, it was short-lived and lacked substantial engagement with the underlying social issues. As a result, the opportunity to raise awareness and promote preventive measures among parents and educators was largely overlooked. These findings underscore the crucial role of online journalism in shaping the discourse surrounding digital child protection and advocate for a more comprehensive integration of educational perspectives in media coverage of sensitive topics.
