Abstract
With the development of artifi cial intelligence and the trend towards automation of various subtasks, there is a need to automate microscopic plankton species identifi cation. Some solutions already exist with relatively modest capabilities. This study examines the results hitherto achieved in this area, the potential goals to be achieved and the way how current AI systems can be applied to this task.
