Abstract

The book presented in this review, Place Naming, Identities and Geography, published by Springer in 2023 and edited by Gerry O’Reilly, comprises 27 English-language studies contributed by 48 scholars from around the world, including Hungary. O’Reilly, professor at Dublin City University, Ireland, has a broad range of research interests, with a primary focus on geopolitics. Over the course of his career, he has published numerous books, scientific articles, and studies; however, this is only the second volume he has edited. The collection spans more than 600 pages and addresses the issues, characteristics, and historical development of geographical names as examined by contemporary scholars. The volume is organized into five thematic chapters, reflecting a coherent structure. Given its substantial length, it is not feasible to discuss every contribution in detail. Consequently, the present paper provides a concise overview of the book’s content, focusing on the studies that the reviewer found most noteworthy, and highlights their contributions to the international study of toponymy. This approach allows the reader to gain insight into the main themes and scholarly approaches represented in the volume while emphasizing the research that the reviewer considers particularly significant.
