Abstract

This study examines the geography of talent in three peripheral NUTS3 regions—Jász-NagykunSzolnok County (Hungary), Altmarkkreis Salzwedel (Germany), and North Ostrobothnia (Finland)—from a historical-geographical perspective. It focuses on the spatial concentration, migration, and retention of talent, which are crucial to territorial development and socio-economic inequality. The findings demonstrate that spatial and social environments significantly shape the recognition, support, and success of talented individuals, particularly in peripheral regions where brain drain threatens the renewal of human capital. Using documentary analysis and comparative statistical methods, the study traces patterns of talent production from the Enlightenment to the new millennium. Results indicate that historically more developed regions with strong educational and social infrastructures have been more successful in retaining and attracting talent. In contrast, regions with weaker institutional backgrounds experience substantial outmigration, contributing to long-term socio-economic decline. This comparative historical analysis examines 150 individuals with outstanding achievements, specifically 50 from each peripheral region (Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, and North Ostrobothnia). The talent pool was compiled using secondary sources, including professional literature, academic databases, and consultations with cultural organizations to ensure a broad and historically relevant sample. The analysis reveals distinct regional patterns in talent activity, reflecting differences in historical economic structures, cultural heritage, and mobility pathways. The study contributes to the geography of talent by investigating under-researched peripheral regions and by emphasizing the critical role of talent retention in sustainable regional development.
