Abstract
Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are polymeric nanostructurescreatedbytheself-assemblyofoppositelycharged macromolecules.PEC-basednovelbiomaterialsarecurrentlybeing researchedascontrolleddrugdeliveryvehiclesduetotheirunique combinationofbeneficialproperties. Inthiswork, theformationof a newcolloid systemcomposedof human apo-transferrin (Tr) protein andhigh-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid (HyA) polysaccharidewasstudiedfromnumerousperspectivesbecause, tothe bestof our knowledge, no information is available regarding this PEC-based Tr-HyA formula. For detailed characterization, the experimental results of several physicochemical and colloid chemistry techniques, suchas light scattering, rheology, titrationmicrocalorimetry, andelectronmicroscopy, were analyzed. It was emphasized that thepHandmass ratioof themacromolecules greatly influence the self-assemblyprocess. Particleswith enhancedstabilitywerepreparedataTr/HyA=2:1massratio.Theapplicabilityofthesecolloidparticleswithadiameterof240− 260nmasdrugdeliveryvehicleswas evaluatedbyencapsulating several practicallywater-insolublemolecules to increase their solubilityinwater.Wehighlightedthatthenanoformulationrevealedca.3timesbettersolubilityandenhancedreleaseforvitamins D3andK1comparedtotheunformulatedones.
