Abstract
This chapter explores two personal narratives from the final stage of the Holocaust. Both members of a married couple kept diaries: Pál Trebits wrote a diary in Budapest, while his wife, Gabriella Trebits, documented her experiences in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1944–1945. First, the two diaries illuminate the different personal timelines of the war in the Hungarian capital and the Nazi concentration camp, based on the writers’ perceptions and interpretations. Second, these texts nuance our understanding of gendered – both female and male – narrative strategies during the Holocaust, illustrating that personal accounts do not always conform to traditional gender roles.
