Abstract

The article discusses in detail the views of Arab thinkers on the scholarly oeuvre of Goldziher. It is based on an analysis of the Arab translations of Goldziher’s Vorlesungen über den Islam, Die Richtungen der islamischen Koranauslegung and of his Tagebuch . It describes the praise showered on Goldziher in some prefaces to the translations, as well as the criticism of his approach included in the footnotes appended to them. There is also an analysis of views which consider Goldziher’s work as part of the imperialist project to destroy Islam and do not find any redeeming feature in his work.
