Abstract

A tanulmány a keresztény demokrácia fogalmának jelentését vizsgálja XIII. Leó pápa gondolkodásában, különös tekintettel a Graves de communi re (1901) kezdetű körlevélre. A dolgozat bemutatja a 19. századi katolikus politikai és eszmetörténeti kontextust, valamint a fogalom korabeli két meghatározó értelmezését: Giuseppe Toniolo társadalometikai, karitatív hangsúlyú felfogását és Romolo Murri politikai reformokra nyitott programját. Az elemzés rámutat, hogy XIII. Leó miért tekintette a „keresztény demokrácia” elnevezést sokak számára „kétértelműnek” és „veszélyesnek”, és hogyan törekedett a fogalom depolitizálására: a keresztény demokráciát elsősorban a nép javát szolgáló, pártpolitikától mentes keresztény cselekvésként határozta meg. A tanulmány végül arra is kitér, hogy e megközelítés nem jelentett teljes elzárkózást a modern politikától. | This article examines the meaning of “Christian democracy” in Pope Leo XIII’s thought, with special attention to the encyclical Graves de communi re (1901). It reconstructs the nineteenth-century political and intellectual background in which Catholic social action and emerging democratic claims intersected, and it outlines two influential contemporary interpretations of the term: Giuseppe Toniolo’s ethical-social and charitable understanding, and Romolo Murri’s more explicitly political, reform-oriented agenda. The study shows why Leo XIII judged the label “Christian democracy” for sounding “equivocal” and “dangerous” to many, and how he attempted to clarify it by separating it from party politics and from social democracy. In Leo’s account, “Christian democracy” denotes primarily a form of Christian beneficence directed to the people’s welfare, which must remain free from par-tisan passions and hostile attitudes toward legitimate authority. The article also notes the tensions within Leo XIII’s broader posture toward modern political regimes.
