Abstract

The study explores the 1989 reopening of the Budapest‑Fasor Lutheran High School, a landmark event in the history of church‑run education in Hungary. It analyses the social, political and ecclesiastical circumstances that enabled the Lutheran Church to reclaim the institution more than three decades after its nationalisation by the communist state. The author highlights the reform movements emerging in the late 1980s, the impact of the 1984 Lutheran World Federation Assembly in Budapest, and the crucial role played by alumni and the “Brotherly Message” reform group. The reopening of the school on 2 September 1989—just weeks before the collapse of the socialist regime—acquired strong symbolic importance, marking a key step toward the restoration of ecclesiastical autonomy and religious freedom. | A tanulmány a Budapesti-Fasori Evangélikus Gimnázium 1989-es újraindítását mutatja be, amely a magyarországi egyházi oktatás történetének egyik kiemelkedő mozzanata. A szerző részletesen feltárja azokat a társadalmi, politikai és egyházi folyamatokat, amelyekben a gimnázium a kommunista államosítás után több mint három évtizeddel ismét visszakerülhetett az Evangélikus Egyház fenntartásába. A tanulmány bemutatja a rendszerváltás előtti években kibontakozó reformtörekvéseket, a Luteránus Világszövetség 1984-es budapesti közgyűlésének hatását, valamint a Fasor egykori diákjainak és a „Testvéri Szó” reformközösségnek szerepét. A szerző hangsúlyozza, hogy az iskola újranyitása – 1989. szeptember 2-án – a politikai rendszer összeomlása előtt néhány héttel valósult meg, így szimbolikus jelentőségű eseménnyé vált az egyházi autonómia és a vallásszabadság visszaszerzésének folyamatában.
