Abstract

Local necroses were induced in leaves of virus-infected Xanth i tobacco, a systemic host for TM V, by hot-water-treatment (50°C for 40 sec) 2 - 5 days after inoculation. Peroxidase activity was augmented during necrogenesis. The increased perioxidase isozymes were present also in the control samples, however, enzyme activities were very high in the necrotic parts of the leaf. The heat-induced necroses and the parallelly augmented peroxidase could not stop systematization of the virus. Neither tissue necrosis, nor increased peroxidase activity are responsible for vi rus localization, i.e. for host resistance.
