Abstract

A magyar nyelv esetleges mongol eredetű jövevényszavainak kérdése több mint 250 éve jelen van a szakirodalomban, a legújabb magyar etimológiai szótárak azonban nem számolnak ilyen nyelvi réteggel. Ligeti Lajos 1935-ben arra a következtetésre jutott, hogy a magyar és a mongol alakok közötti hasonlóságok bolgár-török közvetítéssel magyarázhatók, s mivel a magyar–mongol nyelvi érintkezés nem igazolt, a kérdést a kutatás hosszú időre lezártnak tekintette. A magyar dél szó eredete azonban mindmáig nem tisztázott megnyugtató módon: míg a mongol nyelvekben zöngés szókezdővel (düli), a török nyelvekben zöngétlen szókezdővel (tüš) szerepel. A tanulmány azt vizsgálja, hogy a magyar nyelv kelet-altaji elemeinek kutatását mennyiben befolyásolta a magyarság korai történetére vonatkozó történeti hipotézis – miszerint mongol nyelvű népekkel nem érintkezhetett –, és hogy ez az álláspont a legújabb történeti, régészeti és archeogenetikai kutatások fényében mennyiben tartható fenn. A dolgozat nagyobb részében a magyar dél szó hangtani és jelentéstani elemzésére kerül sor, melynek alapján a tanulmány újra felveti a szó esetleges mongol eredetének lehetőségét. | The question of possible Mongolic loanwords in the Hungarian language has been present in the literature for more than 250 years, yet the most recent etymological dictionaries do not recognize any words of Mongolic origin. In 1935, Lajos Ligeti concluded that the similarities between Hungarian and Mongolic forms can be explained by Bulgar-Turkic mediation, and since Hungarian–Mongolic linguistic contact has not been confirmed, research considered the issue to be settled for a long time. However, the origin of the Hungarian word dél ‘south/noon’ has not yet been satisfactorily clarified: while it occurs with a voiced word-initial consonant (düli) in Mongolic languages, in Turkic languages it uniformly appears with a voiceless word-initial consonant (tüš). This paper examines the extent to which research on the eastern Altaic elements of Hungarian has been influenced by the historical hypothesis that the Hungarians could not have come into contact with Mongolian-speaking populations in their early history, and to what extent this position can be maintained in light of recent historical, archaeological and archaeogenetic research. The greater part of the study is devoted to a phonological and semantic analysis of the Hungarian word dél, on the basis of which the paper revisits the possibility of the word’s Mongolic origin.
