Abstract

Chiovini Ferenc Munkácsy Mihály-díjas és Érdemes Művész szakrális festészete jól ismert. Számos magyarországi templom falát díszítik művei – freskók Jászszentandráson (1933), Szolnokon (1936), Békésszentandráson (1939), valamint szekkók Cegléden (1955). Mindeddig azonban nem volt tudomásunk azon freskóiról, melyeket az 1940-es évek elején az Északkeleti-Kárpátokban található borsai és borgóprundi határvadász-laktanyákba készített. Kutatásunk eddig feltáratlan dokumentumokra, a Chiovini családi archívumra, valamint Chiovini Márta visszaemlékezéseire támaszkodva rekonstruálja a művek keletkezésének körülményeit, ikonográfiai programját és történelmi jelentőségét. A borsai, majd később a borgóprundi kaszárnyák belső tereit díszítő falfestmények révén Chiovini a határvédelem múltját és népéleti motívumait mutatta be, sokszor visszanyúlva a végvári vitézek világához. A tanulmány a mára megsemmisült freskók létrejöttének és ikonográfiájának, korabeli dokumentumokra és fotókra alapozott rekonstruálásával igyekszik hozzájárulni a magyar murális művészet kutatásához. | Ferenc Chiovini, Hungarian painter recipient of the Mihály Munkácsy Prize and the title of Meritorious Artist, is well known for his sacral artworks. His murals adorn numerous ecclesiastical interiors across Hungary, including frescoes in Jászszentandrás (1933), Szolnok (1936), Békésszentandrás (1939) and seccos in Cegléd (1955). However, his murals created to decorate the border guard barracks in Borșa and Prundu Bârgăului (now Romania) in the early 1940s were not known until now. Drawing on previously unexplored documents, the Chiovini family archives, and the personal recollections of Márta Chiovini, the study reconstructs the circumstances surrounding the creation of these murals, their iconographic program, and historical significance. Through his frescoes—once adorning the interiors of the barracks in Borșa and Prundu Bârgăului and other (planned) border guard posts—Chiovini depicted scenes from Hungarian history and folklore, focusing especially on border defense and the legendary world of medieval border-fortress soldiers. This study seeks to enrich the understanding of Hungarian mural art by reconstructing the imagery and significance of these now-vanished works through documentary evidence.
