Abstract
Knowledge of the strength values of Populus canescens is important for expanding the range of applications of this species. The use of wood as an orthogonally anisotropic material in structural engineering is signifi cantly influenced by its strengths in different anatomical directions. The results obtained from tensile and compressive strength tests of test specimens in the main anatomical directions allow the determination of the strength surface, which makes it possible to determine the strength of wood in any direction. A further within-group classification is provided by the separation of sapwood and duramen, so that the strength be haviour of the individual wood sections within the wood body can be revealed in addition to the different ultimate strengths.
