Abstract

Background and aim - Parkinson's disease (PD) is among the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disorders worldwide. In advanced PD, motor fluctuations, dyskinesias and non-motor complications increasingly undermine autonomy and quality of life and may exceed the efficacy of optimized oral/transdermal therapy. We review the current state of infusion (pump) therapies in Hungary, where levodopa/carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) has been reimbursed since 2011, continuous subcutaneous apomorphine infusion (CSAI) since 2021, levodopa-entacapone-carbidopa intrajejunal infusion (LECIG) since 2022, and subcutaneous foslevodopa/foscarbidopa infusion since 2024. Based on the National Health Insurance Fund (NEAK) database, 15 392 men and 15 691 women attended reimbursed care for PD between Nov 2024 and Dec 2025. Despite broad availability, NEAK drug-traffic data (Oct 2025) indicate <50 treated patients per pump modality. Conclusion - Pump therapies remain highly effective options for advanced PD but appear to be underused in Hungary; we discuss barriers and propose practical solutions to improve timely referral and uptake.
