Abstract

In 2022, four skeletons were found in a pit at Berzence Castle. A coin hoard was discovered near the pelvic bone of one of the deceased. Remnants of leather and textil were also found adhering to the coins. The hoard consisted of 5 gold coins and 29 silver coins. The gold forints were minted by the Hungarian kings Albert, Matthias I, and Wladislaus II. After the gold coins, the largest denomination consists of two groschen coins minted in the Electorate of Saxony, known as Zingroschen. These were minted during the joint reign of Frederick III, John, and George between 1507 and 1520. The Hungarian denars were minted during the reigns of Matthias I (5 pieces), Wladislaus II (1 piece), Louis II (6 pieces), and Ferdinand I (12 pieces), and the coin hoard also includes one obol from the time of Matthias I. Foreign coins are represented by two Austrian one-sided coins (pfennigs) minted by Ferdinand I. Since the last coin in the hoard was issued in 1530, it is highly likely that the deceased were buried during or after the 1532 siege, and the coins were buried with them at that time. The coins may have been in a small pouch.
