Abstract
Toponyms often preserve traces of past land use and highlight locations considered significant in local memory. The toponyms and archival maps of Somogy County identify numerous sites associated with scaffolds, executions and torture. By applying GIS-based methods, these locations can be systematically categorized, enabling the identification of the most probable execution sites and supporting their further investigation. Several such sites can be identified in the vicinity of Kaposvár on early modern maps. The georeferencing of a 1778 sketch map depicting the Kapos River, together with selected sheets of the First Military Survey (1782–1785), provides a reliable spatial framework for the localization and geographically oriented interpretation of the depicted execution sites, as well as a presumed fortification, within a GIS environment. This study seeks to classify these notable places and compile them into a structuredinventory, following the methodologi cal criteria established in previous Hungarian scholarship.
