Abstract
The ethnographic collection of the Rippl-Rónai Museum preserves ten women’s coats of identical design, produced at the turn of the nineteenth century. The examination of these garments has provided insight into the practice of tailoring as a craft, as well as into the social, economic, and cultural circumstances of those engaged in it. The research has illuminated broader processes in Hungary that fundamentally shaped the lives and work of artisans. Tracing the life histories of the coats revealed not only their functional and possible symbolic meanings and their transformations over time, but also the roles of their makers, wearers, and all those who came into contact with the objects—including museum professionals—in both past contexts and contemporary interpretations.
