Abstract

The present study undertakes, for the first time, a comprehensive scholarly examination of the plates designed by József Rippl-Rónai for the Andrássy dining room. In addition to reviewing the previously known corpus of objects, the author incorporates hitherto unidentified examples uncovered through his own research. On this basis, the study establishes a systematic typology and provides a detailed formal and iconographic analysis of the painted motifs. Drawing on comparative visual analysis and interpretation, the paper advances a new art-historical hypothesis: the ornamentation of certain object types may be gastronomically inspired, and their ornamental configurations can also be read as stylized representations of food. This interpretative proposal casts new light on the relationship between function, ornament, and meaning within the Gesamtkunstwerk concept of the Andrássy dining room, suggesting a deliberate conceptual interplay between the act of dining and the visual program of the tableware. The proposed interpretation is consistent with Rippl-Rónai’s documented personality and lifestyle, particularly his interest in gastronomy and refined dining culture. By integrating stylistic, iconographic, and cultural-historical approaches, the study not only contributes to the classification of both known and newly identified plates, but also offers a new interpretative framework for examining RipplRónai’s applied art practice and the symbolic dimension of turnof-the-century interiors.
