Abstract

El Regimiento “Soria” 9, con base en la isla de Fuerteventura, es la unidad de Infantería tenida por la más antigua de Occidente, con un dilatado historial en diversos escenarios y continentes y tanto en combate como al servicio de la paz. Últimamente se está barajando la posibilidad de que le sea concedida abiertamente y que figure en su escudo de armas la condición de “Benemérito de la Patria”. Se trata de una distinción que está casi olvidada, que se remonta a principios del siglo XIX, reconociendo servicios especialmente meritorios al servicio de la Patria. Acompañaría al “Tenerife” 49, siendo así Canarias una comunidad autónoma donde más habría con tal consideración. Las razones no estaban realmente estudiadas para tal reconocimiento, más que aludir al historial aludido. El trabajo que se presenta ha investigado y ahondado en ellas, examinando la legitimidad de su concesión. La cuestión no estaría exenta de cierta problemática en tanto se trata de una distinción casi extinguida. | The “Soria” 9 Infantry Regiment, based on the island of Fuerteventura, is considered as the oldest Infantry unit in the West, with a long record in various scenarios and continents, both in combat and in the service of peace. Recently, there has been talk of granting it the title of “Benemérito de la Patria,” and including it on its coat of arms. This is an almost forgotten distinction, dating back to the early 19th century, recognising particularly meritorious service to the Homeland. It would join the “Tenerife” 49, making the Canary Islands one of the autonomous communities with the most recipients of this distinction. The reasons for this recognition were not thoroughly studied, other than referring to the aforementioned record. The present article has researched and delved into these reasons, examining the legitimacy of the award. The issue is not without complexities, as it is an almost extinct distinction.
