Abstract

Kenya is regarded as a biodiversity hotspot. However, biodiversity conservation has been coupled with a few challenges including economic constraints, habitat degradation, climate change, industrialization, and lack of environmental awareness. The current research aimed to reveal the existing knowledge of lichens from Kenyan citizens, literate and illiterate, old and young, and urban and rural, and show the role of including local knowledge in their utilization. This interdisciplinary study combining lichenology and cultural anthropology was conducted in four counties in Kenya (Kakamega, Narok, Nairobi, and Makueni) through semi-structured interviews between July and September 2023.
