Abstract
The article provides the first description and analysis of a previously unknown medical treatise from early modern Turkic Central Asia titled Risālaʾ-i šifāʾ al-abdān ‘A treatise on curing the bodies’. Apart from a general description of the manuscript, the article provides a contextual and linguistic analysis of the treatise using well-chosen, illustrative examples. The analysis also reveals that the treatise exhibits an unusual combination of linguistic traits from East and West Middle Turkic, specifically Chagatai and Oguz. The special vocabulary of the work, including names of diseases and materia medica , is provided in an appendix.
