Abstract

Old Uyghur manuscripts constitute valuable primary sources for the history of Central Asia. Traditionally, they have been of greater interest to scholars of religion and linguistics than to historians. In recent years, however, newly discovered Old Uyghur manuscripts in China have provided historians with crucial insights. The present article introduces an Old Uyghur manuscript leaf, which the authors have titled Praise to Čübäi . This leaf supplies invaluable information concerning Čübäi, the founder of a political entity referred to by Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368) historians as ‘the Chaghataids of Hexi’ or the ‘Ulus of the Prince of Bin’. The purpose of this study is to present the first philological analysis of the leaf. Despite the significance of the manuscript, irreparable damage in certain sections precludes complete reading. Nevertheless, the surviving text yields valuable insights into this historical figure and the political landscape of the era.
