Abstract

Ancient Chinese engagement with the sexual organs is well attested, as evidenced by the detailed classifica-tory schemes of male and female genitalia preserved in Qin- and Han-period bamboo and silk manuscripts. The systematic integration of the reproductive system into physiognomic discourse, however, appears to have crystallized only during the Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties. Early genital physiognomy seems to have focused primarily on women, its principal function being to assist men in selecting suitable sexual partners. Over time, the practice broadened in both scope and intent: by the Dunhuang period, male genitalia too had become objects of physiognomic scrutiny, and the focus had shifted from its earlier bedchamber context toward evaluating prospective marriage partners and prognosticating offspring, wealth, social standing, and other secular concerns. In the Chinese tradition, genital physiognomy centered chiefly on features such as pubic hair, moles, coloration, and the morphology of the genital region. Through systematic collation and comparative analysis of Chinese medical treatises, physiognomic manuals, indigenous Indian texts, and Chinese translations of Buddhist scriptures, this study contends that genital-based divination was not a native Chinese development but was profoundly shaped by Indic models, with Chinese Buddhist translations serving as a crucial conduit for its transmission.
