Abstract

This article analyzes how the Japanese Neo-Confucianist Kaibara Ekiken 貝原益軒 explained his thoughts on respect for innate virtue and acquired learning within the ontological framework view of Qi 氣 (material force) monism, as well as the corresponding method of self-cultivation. This series of internal constructions and reinterpretations of the Zhu Xi school by Ekiken is a key step in the localization of the Zhu Xi school. That serves as a paradigmatic example for examining the complex history of its intellectual convergence and integration in the early Edo period (1603–1868).
