Abstract

Az első világháború kitöréséig lényegében töretlenül fejlődött az Akadémiai Könyvtár, az 1914-ben kezdődő katonai konfliktus azonban a nemzetközi szellemi együttműködést is ellehetetlenítette, Magyarországon pedig mély politikai és gazdasági válságot okozott. A szerző a kronológiai rendet követve, de a kihívásokra adott válaszokra összpontosítva törekszik bemutatni a könyvtár krízisekkel terhelt két és fél évtizedét. A tanulmányból képet kaphatunk arról, hogyan sikerült stabilizálni a könyvtár, illetve a könyvtárat fenntartó Akadémia anyagi helyzetét, hogyan változott a tisztviselők száma, feladatköre és státusza, hogyan szervezték újjá a szerzeményezést, és hogy milyen forrásokból gyarapodott a gyűjtemény. Végül arról ad áttekintést a szerző, hogy hogyan készült fel a Melich János vezette intézmény Budapest frontvárossá válására és a gyűjtemény legértékesebb könyveinek és kéziratainak megmentésére. | The Library of the Academy developed essentially uninterrupted until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. However, this military conflict made international intellectual cooperation impossible and caused a deep political and economic crisis in Hungary. Following a chronological order but focusing on the responses to these challenges, the author seeks to present the library’s crisis-ridden two and a half decades. The study provides insight into how the library’s financial situation—and that of the Academy, which maintained it—was stabilized; how the number, duties, and status of staff members changed; how acquisitions were reorganized; and from what sources the collection was expanded. Finally, the author provides an overview of how the institution, led by János Melich, prepared for Budapest’s transformation into a frontline city and for the rescue of the collection’s most valuable books and manuscripts
