Abstract

A tanulmány Herman Hollerith 1889. március 13-án kelt, Kőrösy Józsefhez – a magyar statisztikatörténet egyik kiemelkedő alakjához – írt, a KSH Könyvtár kézirattárában őrzött levelét mutatja beés értelmezi. A dokumentum jelentőségét az adja, hogy Hollerith éppen találmánya európai elismertetésének döntő pillanatában fordult Kőrösyhez segítségért. Cikkem a Hollerith-levelet a lyukkártyásadatfeldolgozás, a népszámlálási munka gépesítése és a modern informatika előtörténete felől vizsgálja, rövid áttekintést nyújtva a Hollerith-gépek korai európai megjelenéséről, valamint a magyarországi lyukkártyás adatfeldolgozás későbbi, 20. századi kibontakozásáról is. A vizsgált forrás ígyegyszerre gazdagítja a magyar statisztika, az informatika és az ügyvitel-gépesítés nemzetközi történetét, és rávilágít arra, hogy a modern számítástechnika előzményei szorosan összekapcsolódtak astatisztikai adatfeldolgozás gyakorlati problémáival és intézményi hálózataival. | The study presents and interprets a letter by Herman Hollerith, dated 13 March 1889 and preserved in the manuscript collection of the Library of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, addressed to József Kőrösy, one of the outstanding figures in the history of Hungarian statistics. The document is of particular significance because Hollerith turned to Kőrösy for assistance at a decisive moment in the European recognition of his invention. The study examines the letter from the perspective of punched-card data processing, the mechanisation of census work, and the prehistory of modern computing. It also reviews the early appearance of Hollerith machines in Europe, as well as the later, twentieth-century development of punched-card data processing in Hungary. The source under examination thus enriches the history of Hungarian statistics, the history of computing, and the international history of office mechanisation alike. The document also reminds us that the antecedents of modern computing were closely connected to the practical problems and institutional networks of statistical data processing.
