Abstract

This study focuses on community-based architecture and seeks to show the theoretical and practical aspects of the topic. The authors try to bridge theory and praxis by providing multiple parallel approaches. The outlined agenda for the regeneration of place in this study is deeply rooted in the contemporary understanding of architectural phenomenology and the latter’s possible mathematical metaphors. The authors extend the topic of genius loci also to places where it is not expected, and, based on less-known realised projects, they claim that terrain vague or border zones may host creative community activities. These may develop new forms of collaboration, define novel aesthetics and connect to the local cultural heritage less academically. Moreover, they find that combining natural materials and contemporary design skills may facilitate intercultural knowledge exchange. Besides the author’s personal experiences as designers and builders, a realistic account of the local community feedback is also an integral part of this chapter.
