Abstract
This study explores the system of Jewish ghettos established in the Baltic States under German occupation between 1941 and 1944, focusing particularly on short‑lived rural ghettos. Dean demonstrates that over one hundred improvised ghettos existed in Lithuania and nearly thirty in Latvia, often serving as precursors to mass shootings. The article analyses the close relationship between ghettoization and extermination, as well as cooperation between German authorities and local collaborators. It distinguishes between ghettos, forced‑labour camps and so‑called “remnant ghettos.” Special attention is given to the concept of “destruction ghettos,” whose primary function was rapid concentration and annihilation. The study concludes that the Baltic model represents one of the most accelerated and violent implementations of the Holocaust.
