Abstract

A szerzők jelen tanulmányban az irodalmi adatok áttekintését követően bemutatják két ló esetét, amelyek trauma következtében a martájéki hátcsigolyák tövisnyúlványainak többszörös törését szenvedték el. A martájék duzzadt és fájdalmas volt, a lovak kétoldali elülső végtag sántaságot is mutattak. A hátcsigolyák processus spinosus-ainak törésének gyanúja merült fel, ami a kiegészítő röntgenvizsgálat során megerősítést nyert. A konzervatív kezelés során a fájdalmasság megszűnt, azonban a martájék tartós deformitása alakult ki mindkét lónál. Az egyik ló már teljes értékűen visszatért a sportba, a másik lovat a tulajdonos a kézirat megírásának időpontjában még legelőn tartja. | Background: The fracture of the dorsal spinous processes of the withers in the horse is a rare condition, due to traumatic injury such as fall on the back or running through a low door. Severe acute symptoms are deformation of the withers, pain on palpation, lameness of the thoracic limbs and stiff gait. Diagnose is easily achieved with physical examination and latero-lateral radiographs of the withers. Although the condition carries an excellent prognosis with conservative treatment, extended period of rest is recommended in most of the cases. Some horses might need a surgical procedure to remove the fragments of the spinous processes. Most horses return to athletic soundness and perform at their previous level. Objectives: The aim of our study was to review the published data on fractures of the withers in adult horses and describe the anamnesis, clinical and X-ray findings, treatment and long term prognosis of two horses diagnosed with dorsal spinous process fracture of the thoracic vertebrae. Materials and Methods: Two horses were investigated under field conditions. After recording of the history of the cases, physical examination and latero-lateral radiographs were obtained from the thoracic vertebrae. Conservative treatment was recommended for both horses. Examinations on follow-up were repeated for a 17 and 9 months period, respectively after the initial trauma of the horses. Results and Discussion: Both horses suffered trauma and were severely lame on both front limbs. The withers were painful on palpation and swollen, the contour of the withers were changed in shape on presentation. Latero-lateral radiographs showed multiple dislocated fractures of several dorsal spinous processes of the thoracic vertebrae. The horses received non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and had stall rest for 2 and 6 months. One horse had open fractures and was treated with antimicrobials for a short time period. Although the change in the contour of the withers remained, the horses became painless and one horse has already fully returned to previous athletic function.
