Abstract

The Holt-Sebes-Körös has once been the main channel of the river Sebes-Körös. In its current state, it’s functioning as a canal gathering the excess groundwater of the Kis-Sárrét geographical area. A significant portion of its watershed is located in a nature reserve. Habitats like this can be a secondary refuge to fish species that were once abundant in the vast marshlands and bogs on the floodplains. The aim of our research was to assess the fish fauna in this body of water, and thus sheddig light on the ecological conditions of the Holt-Sebes-Körös. Despite many areas classified as protected nature reserve, the okány sewage plant’s treated wastewater is deposited into the canal. Our research also aimed to detect changes in the fish fauna caused by said wastewater high in organic pollutants and nutrients.
