Abstract

Szalay Lajos (1909–1995) festő- és rajzolóművész, valamint nemzedéktársai néhány évesek voltak az első világháború idején, ám a másodikat fiatal felnőttként — jobbára hadkötelesként — élték át. Közvetlen emlékeik, emlékfoszlányaik lehettek, vagy közvetettek születhettek már az első világháborúról is. Szalay részt vett egy első világháborús rajzpályázaton, amelynek sikeres darabjait — így Szalayét is — bemutatták Bécsben. | Lajos Szalay (1909–1995), the painter and illustrator had been a soldier for 2 years at the end of the 1930s and early of the 1940s. He took part in drilling and exercises. He assisted to the occupation of Transylvania and he was at the east front line up to River Don and Kursk as a war correspondent. Nevertheless, he hated the war and he gave voice to this in his several interviews and works (pen sketches, aquarelles and tempera pictures). He thought that the war, as a senseless aggression among the men and Kains’ cruelty, was the largest historical burden in the 20th century. His first war works are about the scenes and the front line, primarily. Later on, when he had more experience of the war, he introduced both the aggressive soldier and the victims in his works. His drawings show the falling together, the attacks, and the regress of defeated army by rough expression. In 1954, he represents the war in a separate cycle in his Tucuman (Argentina) sketching-book. Actually, we can find similar graphics in his all oeuvre (lifework), in which the catholic creator with strong religious background protested against the war. The artist Elemér Polony, who was also a war correspondent, wrote “Diary” about the eastern front line. In this “Diary” he mentioned not only Szalay but also Imre Ballagó, István Benyovszky, Barna Megyeri and Lajos Pándy artists. Their several war works of art were exhibited on the War Correspondent Exhibition in the Vigadó, between 2nd and 12th of May, 1943.
