Abstract

Up to now, damages caused by wild geese have not yet been examined in Hungary. In special literature published abroad on this topic, data extremely differ from each other. The latter fact my partly be due to differing conditions present in various countries. In Hungary problems of damages caused by wild geese have not emerged in course of large-scale farming. However, in course of privatisation farmers’ claims for damage compensation of this kind have to be taken in account. Damages caused by grazing of geese are not identical with harvest damages, and it is difficult to trace the intensity of grazing. For investigations started in 1997 on damages caused by wild geese in agriculture, the author’s results of experiments referring to browsing simulation served as basis. Assessment of damages caused by wild geese is performed in the environment of Lake Fertő, one of the most important habitats for aquatic game in Hungary. Also the experiment based on browsing simulation was performed here, thus the territorial conditions were the same in case of both experiments. By the Aquatic Game Investigation Group of our institution game counts are performed continuously. On the basis of such counts conclusions can be drawn on the intensity of grazing. Actual assessment of damages is performed by comparing the harvest results gained on control (untouched) plots with those originating from plots where wild geese have grazed.
