Abstract
It is beyond doubt that at national or even greater regional, continental scales monthly censuses enable us to trace the population trends of waterbird species and to observe the changes in the importance of certain migratory routes (since an adequately dense, efficient observer-network has to register the birds at some point). My research results, nevertheless, draw attention to the fact that monthly censuses are not sufficient for determining the national and international significance of waterbird habitats and evaluating their role in the migration of waterbird species. My inquiry, which covered 6 species in the flooded area of Lake Fertő in Hungary, showed a difference of 1.8- 10.46-fold between the results of the weekly and monthly counts - depending on the species. Apart from their natural scientific importance, these numbers can be very important for the nature conservation treatment of the territories and their inclusion in the lists of international agreements with the objective of nature conservation because they enable us to take into account the ecological demands of the given species.
