Abstract

The author present the results of the Hungarian Geese Monitoring for 2000/2001 in the form of a data base. After reviewing the basic data recorded at each site of observation (Table 1-21.) they analyse the obtained data separately for each species, i.e. Bean Goose (Anser fabalis) (Table 22., Map 1., Figure 1-2.), White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) (Table 23., Map 2., Figure 3-4.), Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus) (Table 24., Map 3., Figure 5.), Greylag Goose (Anser snwrXTable 25., Map 4., Figure 6-7.), Brent Goose (Branta bernicla)(Table 26., Map 5., Figure 8.), Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis)(Table 27, Map 6., Figure 9.), as well as for the total of observed geese (Table 28., Figure 10-11). In repsect of dominance - when data recorded monthly in each of the observed sites (Table 1-21., Figure 12.) or those referring to the total of geese present in Hungary (Table 28., Figure 13) are analysed, it is found that in conformity with the numbers of individuals, also in the season 2000/2001 White-fronted Goose was the most common goose species in Hungary (max. 68%), followed by Bean Goose (max. 37%), Greylag Goose ranking third (48% and 100%). Dominance of Lesser White-fronted Goose - a globally threatened species - ranged from 0% to <1%. If the data obtained for the season 2000/2001 are fitted into the data series of long term monitoring, the following conclusions can be drawn from the actual changes in stock numbers. Peak number of Bean Goose (38.995 birds) was lower as the maximum counted in the season 1999/2000 (57,099 birds), decrements amounting merely to 32%. Peak numbers of White-fronted Goose (86.289 birds) amount to 88% of the maximum counted in 1999/2000 (98,132 birds), decrements amounting to 12%. For the globally threatened Lesser White-fronted Goose may be considered as lower (4 birds!) to the maximum counted in the season 1999/2000 (40 birds). Greylag Goose continued to be present with high numbers in Hungary. However, in the new season its peaks (37.768 birds) were found to be by 5% lower those counted in the previous season (39,716 birds). In spite of the fact that for Anser albifrons and for Anser anser stabilization and for Anser fabalis significant decrement was observed, maximum numbers of total geese registered simultaneously (145.290 birds) by -6.3% differed (lower) from those in the season 1999/2000 (155,061 birds).
