Abstract
The Latin letter from Frederick II to the Nicaean emperor John Vatatzes Si quantum votis-prestolamur, one of the few Latin letters preserved from the correspondence between these two rulers, presents a number of problems, both in terms of editing, textual analysis and historical contextualization. In this exceptional document, Frederick II’s chancery seems to exalt Byzantine Caesaropapism, and uses a number of unusual terms that are difficult to interpret. We offer here a new edition of this document and a new analysis that re-examines its authenticity, content and dating.
