Abstract
Essential transition metals like copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc are vital cofactors in plant and algal redox reactions. However, improper accumulation or interfering non-essential metals generate free radicals, disrupting metabolic and membrane functions. Efficient intracellular metal homeostasis relies on complex sensing, transport, and regulatory networks. Recent research highlights iron sensing by RING domain-containing proteins, bHLH transcription factor cascades, plastidial iron uptake, and zinc metallochaperones. Furthermore, non-essential metals trigger epigenetic and epitranscriptomic alterations, such as histone modification and DNA methylation, impacting metal resilience. Future progress depends on multi-omics integration and advanced spectroscopic methods to characterize plant metalloproteomes.
